Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy explained
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy means breathing oxygen inside a sealed chamber pressurised above normal atmospheric pressure. The pressure forces far more oxygen than usual to dissolve directly into the blood plasma, reaching tissue that a poor blood supply would otherwise starve. A session typically runs 60 to 90 minutes, and treatments are almost always sold as a course rather than singly.
It is a real hospital treatment with a defined list of approved conditions - decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, certain non-healing wounds, radiation damage to tissue, some serious infections - where the evidence is solid and the mechanism is understood.
Longevity clinics use it outside that list, for recovery, cognition, fatigue and ageing. That use rests on a much smaller and much weaker body of research, and the strongest-sounding claims made for it typically come from small studies without a convincing control group. It is worth asking any clinic to be explicit about which category your intended use falls into.
The other thing worth knowing is that pressure varies enormously between settings. Hospital chambers run at pressures several times higher than the soft inflatable chambers sold for home and gym use, and the two are not the same treatment despite sharing the name.

Chamber type is the main divider. A hard-shell multi-place chamber running at clinical pressure with a trained operator costs several times a session in a soft inflatable chamber, and the price difference reflects a genuinely different treatment.
Courses are the norm because protocols involve repeated sessions, so the number that matters is the course price rather than the session price.
Medical supervision, an ear-pressure assessment before the first dive, and monitoring during the session all sit in the higher price bands and are worth identifying.
For an approved condition, hyperbaric therapy is often covered by insurance or a national health service and delivered in a hospital. For wellness use it is not covered anywhere.
Who it suits, and who it does not
For the approved conditions it is a hospital treatment, prescribed and delivered clinically rather than bought.
Outside them, clinics offer it to people focused on recovery from training or injury and on fatigue. What can be said honestly is that the research base for those uses is small, and that most people find the sessions pleasant and low-risk.
It is unsuitable for anyone who cannot equalise the pressure in their ears, and it is not performed with an untreated collapsed lung. Ear and sinus problems, recent surgery, some chest conditions and certain medicines all need checking first, which is why a screening consultation is not optional.

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy used for?
Its approved uses are decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, certain non-healing wounds, radiation injury to tissue, and some serious infections. Longevity clinics also offer it for recovery, fatigue and cognition, where the evidence is much weaker.
How long is a hyperbaric session?
Usually 60 to 90 minutes at pressure, plus time to descend and ascend. Protocols are courses, so a single session is rarely what is being sold.
Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy safe?
In trained hands it is well tolerated. The common problem is ear or sinus pain from the pressure change, which is why equalising is taught first. Rarer effects include temporary short-sightedness with long courses, and seizures at high pressures, which is one reason chamber pressure and supervision matter.
What is the difference between a hard chamber and a soft chamber?
Hard-shell chambers reach clinical pressures; soft inflatable chambers operate at a fraction of that. They share a name and deliver very different treatments, and the research on approved conditions was done in hard chambers.
Does insurance cover hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
