Cryotherapy explained
Whole-body cryotherapy is two to three minutes standing in a chamber cooled to somewhere between minus 110 and minus 140 degrees Celsius, usually with nitrogen vapour or refrigerated air. The skin cools sharply; the core does not, which is the main difference from an ice bath.
People use it for recovery after training, for sore joints, for skin conditions and because the effect on mood in the twenty minutes afterwards is pronounced. That short-term lift is consistent and is most of why people come back.
The research is thin relative to how widely it is sold. Reviews of recovery outcomes are mixed, and where a benefit shows up it is usually in how sore people report feeling rather than in how they perform. Ice-water immersion has more evidence behind it, which is awkward for an industry built on a more expensive machine.
One finding worth knowing if you train for muscle growth: chilling hard immediately after resistance training appears to blunt some of the adaptation. If building muscle is the goal, timing matters, and straight after the session may be the wrong moment.
What it costs
From this directory
Of the 26 priced clinics listing this service, 3 are in the entry band ($), 21 in the upper band ($$$) and 2 in the top band ($$$$). 3 further listings do not publish enough to place.
Single sessions are cheap and memberships are cheaper per session, which is the entire commercial model - the value proposition depends on going often.
Nitrogen chambers and electric chambers differ in cost and in how the cold is delivered. Localised units treating one joint are cheaper again.
Nothing about it is covered by insurance.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It suits people who find it helps them feel recovered and who enjoy it - a defensible reason to buy something cheap and low-risk.
It suits people less well if they are expecting a measurable performance effect, and it is the wrong tool immediately after resistance training if muscle growth is the goal.
It is unsuitable for people with uncontrolled high blood pressure, significant heart or lung disease, cold-triggered conditions such as Raynaud’s or cold urticaria, and in pregnancy. Every clinic should screen for these before a first session.
Questions to ask before you book
The answers separate clinics far more reliably than the service list on their website does.
- What temperature is the chamber, and is it nitrogen or electric
- Is someone trained watching the session, and can I stop it at any point
- What do you screen for before a first session
- How long is a session, and what do you recommend I wear
- Is there a single-session price, or only memberships
- What do you tell people who train for muscle growth about timing

Cryotherapy: common questions
How cold is whole-body cryotherapy?
Chambers typically run between minus 110 and minus 140 degrees Celsius for two to three minutes. The skin cools sharply; core body temperature barely changes in that time.
Does cryotherapy help recovery?
Reviews are mixed. Where an effect shows up it is usually in reported soreness rather than in measured performance, and ice-water immersion has more evidence behind it than the chamber does.
Is cryotherapy safe?
For screened people it is generally well tolerated, and the common problems are skin irritation and cold burns from damp skin or clothing. It is avoided in uncontrolled high blood pressure, significant heart and lung disease, cold-triggered conditions and pregnancy.
Cryotherapy or ice bath - which is better?
For evidence, ice-water immersion. For convenience and comfort, the chamber. They are not equivalent: immersion cools the tissue far more deeply, while the chamber cools the skin much faster.
How often should you do cryotherapy?
There is no established schedule. Clinics sell memberships built around several sessions a week; the research does not establish a dose, and the honest position is that people go as often as they find it worth it.
