Red Light Therapy Clinics

Red light therapy shines red and near-infrared light on the skin. The evidence is reasonable for skin and hair, mixed for pain, and absent for ageing. 29 clinics in this directory list Red Light Therapy, across 26 cities.

Facts on this page are checked against each clinic's own website. Oldest check: 25 August 2026. 12 of the 29 listed have been checked so far.

Red Light Therapy explained

Red light therapy - also called photobiomodulation, meaning the use of light to change how cells behave - exposes skin to red and near-infrared light from panels, beds or handheld devices. Sessions run ten to twenty minutes and are painless.

The proposed mechanism is specific: light in these wavelengths is absorbed by an enzyme in the mitochondria, the compartments where cells generate energy, which is thought to nudge cellular energy production and signalling. It is one of the better-defined mechanisms in this directory.

The evidence is strongest where the target is close to the surface. Skin - wrinkles, wound healing, some acne - and hair growth have the most supportive trials. Deeper targets such as joints, muscle recovery and pain are studied but less consistent, and systemic claims about metabolism or ageing are not established.

Dose is the thing nobody advertises and everybody gets wrong. Effects depend on wavelength, power at the skin, distance and time, and more is not better - there is a range beyond which the effect drops off. Two clinics with the same panel and different session lengths are delivering different treatments, and most devices do not tell you what dose you received.

What it costs

From this directory

Of the 27 priced clinics listing this service, 3 are in the entry band ($), 21 in the upper band ($$$) and 3 in the top band ($$$$). 2 further listings do not publish enough to place. 1 of the 29 requires a membership rather than selling services one at a time; the rest can be booked individually.

Clinic sessions are sold singly or by membership, and the per-session price is low, so memberships are the model.

The relevant comparison is a home device. Panels of comparable output are widely sold, and for a treatment done several times a week the arithmetic often favours buying rather than visiting - the honest thing a clinic can offer over a panel is a controlled dose and a trained operator.

Medical-grade beds and full-body units cost more than face panels and treat more area per session.

Insurance does not cover it, other than specific dermatological uses in some systems.

Who it suits, and who it does not

The best-supported uses are skin and hair. People coming for those have the most trial evidence behind them.

People coming for joint pain or recovery are in a mixed evidence area; people coming for systemic anti-ageing effects are ahead of what has been shown.

It should be avoided over an area with an undiagnosed skin lesion, and people taking medicines that increase light sensitivity, or with eye conditions, should check first. Eye protection is standard for near-infrared exposure.

Questions to ask before you book

The answers separate clinics far more reliably than the service list on their website does.

  • What wavelengths does the device emit, and at what power measured at the skin
  • How far should I stand, and how long is a session - and what is that based on
  • Is the device a medical device registered here, or consumer equipment
  • Is eye protection provided
  • How many sessions before I would expect to notice anything, for my specific goal
  • Would a home panel do the same thing for what I want

Red Light Therapy: common questions

Does red light therapy work?

For skin - wrinkles, wound healing, some acne - and for hair growth, there is reasonable trial support. For joint pain and muscle recovery the evidence is mixed. For systemic anti-ageing effects it is not established.

How long should a red light therapy session be?

Typically ten to twenty minutes, but the honest answer is that it depends on the device’s power at your distance. More is not better: the effect falls off above a certain dose, which is why session length without power output is a meaningless number.

What is photobiomodulation?

It is the technical name for using red and near-infrared light to change cell behaviour. The light is absorbed by an enzyme in the mitochondria, the parts of a cell that produce energy.

Is red light therapy safe?

It is non-ionising and generally well tolerated, with mild warmth or temporary redness the usual complaints. Eye protection is used for near-infrared, and it should not be applied over an undiagnosed skin lesion or by people on medicines that increase light sensitivity without checking first.

Is a clinic panel better than a home device?

Not necessarily. A clinic offers a controlled dose, a larger treated area and a trained operator; a comparable home panel offers frequency at a fixed cost. For a treatment done several times a week, the arithmetic often favours the home device.
