Medcan

Medcan's one-day Annual Health Assessment costs CAD 4,250 plus tax, and its separate Year-Round Care membership is CAD 1,430 plus tax a year for one person or CAD 2,675 for a family. Both numbers are published on the clinic's own site.

Medcan is a private health-assessment clinic at 150 York Street in Toronto's Financial District, with further Ontario sites at Kingsway, York Mills, Oakville, Collingwood and a seasonal clinic in Port Carling, Muskoka.

The assessment is the main product: a physician-led day of up to 15 screening stations covering more than 100 biomarkers, with results discussed the same day. Medcan sorts them into what it calls the Vital Five - heart, cancer, mind, metabolic and movement - and closes with a Medcan Health Score, a number out of 100 built from your age plus ten markers you can change.

Stations include a submaximal VO2 max test, which measures the most oxygen your body can use while exercising hard, an ECG tracing of the heart's rhythm, grip strength, InBody scanning for body composition, an abdominal ultrasound, a hearing test and, where it applies, bone density.

Almost everything beyond that day is sold separately, and priced openly:

• Enhanced Longevity Assessment, single tests from CAD 795 - an advanced blood panel, a home sleep study, or continuous glucose monitoring, which follows blood sugar through a small skin sensor
• Enhanced Heart Health, single tests from CAD 550 - including an ultrasound measure of thickening in the neck artery wall and an echocardiogram, with results usually back in two to four weeks
• genetic screening, from CAD 425 for a single Alzheimer's-risk gene, CAD 1,115 for targeted cancer, heart, medication-response or pregnancy panels, CAD 1,995 for a 160-gene panel covering 45 conditions, and from CAD 6,300 for whole genome sequencing
• the Galleri blood test, CAD 1,995, which Medcan says screens for more than 50 cancer types
• a liver assessment from CAD 815, a vision and eye exam from CAD 250

Medcan's site lists no whole-body MRI. The imaging is targeted instead: an abdominal ultrasound on the day, with heart and liver scanning sold as add-ons. These are also uninsured services in Ontario, which the clinic says may be reimbursable through a workplace Health Spending Account.

It suits someone who wants a lot measured in one day and will pay out of pocket for it. If what you want is ongoing access to a doctor, that is the membership rather than the assessment - they are separate purchases.
